Ally Hutchins Commits to LSU Softball: A New Chapter Begins

Baton Rouge - Ally Hutchins, a standout transfer from the University of Kentucky, has officially committed to LSU Softball, bringing her versatile skill set and high on-base percentage to Baton Rouge. In an exclusive interview, Hutchins shared details about her commitment process, her reasons for transferring, and her excitement for joining the Tigers. Below is a breakdown of her journey and what lies ahead.

Hutchins Commits to LSU After Enthusiastic FaceTime Call with Coaches

Hutchins made her commitment to LSU over a FaceTime call with the coaching staff on a Tuesday night following her visit to Baton Rouge the previous weekend. “I was on my visit last weekend and I actually had one more visit that I had already scheduled to go on right after. I called them, I called the coaches... And told them over FaceTime,” she said. The reaction from the coaches was one of mutual excitement: “They were excited. I was excited too. I'm, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to play under them and to play for LSU. It's an amazing program,”

A native of Kentucky, Hutchins is no stranger to being away from home, as her time at Kentucky was a four-hour drive with a time change. She’s ready for the move to Louisiana, thanks to her supportive parents. “I'm excited. My parents are very, very supportive and I'm very thankful for them, so. I know they'll be at just about every game,” she shared.

While Hutchins doesn’t have direct connections to the current LSU roster or coaching staff, she noted a tangential tie: “My travel ball coach's wife played at LSU. At some point,” referring to Jill (Crawford) Higdon who played for Yvette Girouard in the late 90's. Her decision to choose LSU was driven by her admiration for the program and its resources. “I just really liked the school, and I really liked the coaches,” she said.

Hutchins Finds Perfect Fit and Growth Opportunity at LSU

Hutchins entered the transfer portal not due to a lack of playing time—she started every game at Kentucky—but because she felt there was a better personal fit elsewhere. “I just felt like there was a better fit somewhere else for me. I felt like I needed a change more than anything,” she explained. After taking one visit prior to LSU and having another lined up, it was her experience in Baton Rouge that sealed the deal. “The coaches, we were fortunate enough to be able to go to a super-regional game at baseball and just seeing the fan base." Alex Box wins again. "Just the school in general, everything, every resource that they have is just amazing,” she said.

What excites Hutchins most about joining LSU is the opportunity for growth. “I think the development aspect, honestly. Just getting better as a player because I know the coaches can make me the best that I can be,” she stated. The LSU coaching staff pitched her on how well she fits into their offensive strategy, particularly with her high walk rate, which would have ranked among the top on LSU’s 2025 roster. “They thought I fit really well into their offense with all my walks, and they thought that they could get me some more power, which is something I'm looking for,” Hutchins said. At Kentucky, she batted leadoff this past season, a role she grew to love after hitting third to sixth as a freshman.

Hutchins: A Versatile Athlete with a Passion for the Game and Its Community

Hutchins’ keen eye at the plate stems from her diverse experience on the field. “Honestly, a lot of it is just I kind of trust my eyes more than anything. I used to pitch, so that kind of helps me. I also used to catch... I've gotten basically all perspectives of the zone,” she said. A multi-positional athlete, Hutchins played shortstop, pitched, and caught in high school, humorously noting there aren’t many positions she hasn’t tried.

Reflecting on her time in Kentucky, Hutchins cherishes the lifelong friendships she formed. “Honestly, just the people I was around and the friends I've made because, I know they're going to be my friends for life and they're some of the best people I've ever met,” she said. Looking ahead, she’s thrilled about playing in front of LSU’s passionate fan base, which left an impression during her visit to a baseball super regional at Alex Box Stadium and when she played at Tiger Park last season. “Just the attendance and the fan support, I mean, it felt like we were surrounded on all sides and... there's nothing better than like a great fan base,” she recalled.

Balancing Ambitions: Ally Hutchins' Journey from Pre-Med to Potential Pro Softball

Off the field, Hutchins is a pre-med biology major with two years of eligibility remaining. While she has ambitions to attend medical school, she hasn’t ruled out professional softball with the rise of leagues like the AUSL. “I have plans for softball. I haven't really thought about it... I'm definitely like not opposed to it. I just haven't really thought about it,” she said.

As Ally Hutchins prepares to don the purple and gold, her combination of plate discipline, versatility, and drive to improve makes her a valuable addition to LSU Softball. Fans can look forward to seeing her thrive in an environment she’s already fallen in love with.
