The Pickens Sisters Return to the Same Dugout While Strengthening LSU’s Buford Pipeline

Sometimes the best journeys come full circle. For Madison and Mackenzie Pickens, that journey began at Buford High School in Buford, Georgia, where they helped continue one of the nation’s premier softball programs. It then split into separate paths at Louisville and Ole Miss before leading them back to the same dugout in Baton Rouge.

Growing Apart to Grow Together

After graduating from Buford, the Pickens twins made a decision that surprised many. Instead of staying together, they intentionally chose different schools. “I think we were always known as the twins,” Mackenzie told LSU Daily. “We wanted to create a name for ourselves separately. We loved playing together for sure, but we also wanted to know what it would be like playing on different teams. We wanted to create our own experiences and not only be known as the twins.”

Madison shared a similar perspective. “We decided to attend different schools so that we could have our own experience,” she said. “We have always loved playing together but we were often compared. We wanted the opportunity to do our own thing and grow independent from each other.” Those experiences ultimately strengthened both players and, perhaps more importantly, their relationship.

“It was a great experience as it allowed us to learn how to be on our own with new friends and people,” Madison said. “The distance brought us closer as we valued the time we had with each other and realized how hard it was to be apart.”

Finding Their Way Back Together

When both entered the transfer portal this summer, there was one thing they knew. They wanted to be teammates again. “When we entered the portal, we planned on ending up at the same school,” Madison said. “We had our own experiences at Ole Miss and Louisville, and I think that it has made us even closer. But I am very excited to be playing with her again and so grateful for this opportunity.”

For Mackenzie, the reunion carried even deeper meaning. “We really wanted to try and end up at the same school again,” she said. “Obviously we spent the last two years apart, so we knew how it felt to be apart. It was hard on both us and our families trying to support both of us with travel and their schedules. So yes, it was our goal to end back together. We are each other’s best friends and she is my better half.”

Now, after proving themselves individually in the ACC and SEC, they’ll once again share the same uniform.

Proven Production Arrives in Baton Rouge

The reunion also brings one of the nation’s most productive offensive duos to Tiger Park.

Madison arrives after earning Softball America Second Team All-America honors at Louisville, finishing No. 14 nationally with a .456 batting average while collecting 78 hits, driving in 67 runs and establishing herself as the No. 6 overall player in the transfer portal.

Mackenzie carved out her own identity in the SEC at Ole Miss, launching 11 home runs and driving in 43 RBI while ranking as the No. 11 overall player in the transfer portal.

Together, the Pickens sisters bring 20 home runs and 110 RBI from the 2026 season to an LSU lineup that continues to add proven offensive firepower.

Why LSU?

As they navigated the transfer portal, LSU quickly emerged as the right fit.

For Mackenzie, the decision centered around the people.

“The community and environment,” she said. “You can really tell how much LSU values their sports and athletes. The environment is unlike any other SEC school. It seems like they do a great job of supporting and taking care of their athletes both on and off the field.”

Madison felt the same.

“The whole staff and community were so supportive of the team and truly wanted to do anything to help them succeed,” she said. “It really did feel like such a family and everybody was so welcoming.”

There was another familiar face waiting in Baton Rouge.

LSU hitting coach Bryce Neal originally recruited Madison while he was on staff at Louisville. When asked whether that previous relationship made a difference during the recruiting process, her answer was simple. “Yes it definitely did.”

She added that throughout the recruiting process, the relationships continued to grow. “The portal can be a stressful process but the coaches were so easy to talk to and I feel like they truly cared for us. I have so much respect for them and I value the strong relationship that we were already able to build.”

More Than Two Transfers

While LSU fans see two accomplished transfers arriving in Baton Rouge, the Tigers are starting to open the door more and creating meaningful inroads with ties to one of the country’s most successful high school softball programs.

Buford isn’t just known for producing elite players.

It produces champions. The Wolves have captured 13 Georgia state championships, including an incredible stretch of 10 consecutive titles from 2007 through 2016. They added championships again in 2022, 2023 and 2025, finishing this past season with a perfect 36-0 record while earning recognition as the No. 1 high school softball team in America.

Winning isn’t simply celebrated at Buford. It’s expected. That championship culture helped shape both Madison and Mackenzie long before they reached the college game.

When asked what it means to see the growing connection between Buford and LSU, Madison reflected on the program that helped shape all of them.

“It means a lot to us as we have so much love and respect for the Buford program and Coach Adams,” she said. “All the girls have worked so hard to get where they are now, so I’m just really proud to see everyone achieve their dreams.”

Reunited With Another Wolf

The Pickens sisters won’t be the only familiar faces in Tiger Park. Incoming freshman pitcher Addie Rackley also starred at Buford before signing with LSU, continuing the connection between the two programs. Rackley grew up looking up to the Pickens twins and is excited to share the field with them again.

“I’m really excited. They’re both really good people and really good athletes and they were always good role models for me growing up, so I’m excited to continue that with them.” -Addie Rackley

For Mackenzie, the feeling is mutual.

“It’s awesome getting to play with a former teammate like Addie again. This pipeline just shows how great of a program Buford really is.”

A Development Worth Watching

The significance of the Buford connection extends beyond the three players currently headed to Baton Rouge. It speaks to the caliber of program LSU has established a relationship with.

Buford continues to produce elite national talent year after year. The program’s current roster already features consensus No. 1 overall 2029 prospect LG Goldin, who as a freshman delivered the walk-off three-run home run that clinched Buford’s perfect 36-0 season and 13th state championship.

Whether future Buford stars eventually choose LSU or another destination isn’t the point. The point is that LSU has the door opened to one of the nation’s premier talent-producing programs, where championship expectations are the standard and elite players are developed year after year.

Messages to Tiger Nation

Madison already knows exactly what she wants to accomplish in Baton Rouge.

“I want to do everything I can to help the team achieve all the goals we put ahead of us. I want to remain focused on the things I can control and help maintain the winning culture here at LSU.” She added " I am so grateful for for the opportunity to put on the purple and gold with my sister, and so ready to be a part of the amazing culture and atmosphere at LSU. Geaux Tigers !

She also can’t wait to experience everything that comes with being a Tiger.

“I’m looking forward to making new friendships and memories with the girls on and off the field. I am excited to experience the SEC atmosphere, especially at the football games.”

Beyond the excitement of competing on the field, Mackenzie is equally excited about becoming part of the LSU community.

“The community and the girls. I’m super excited to be a part of the LSU family. I’m looking forward to becoming great friends with all of the girls and the fan base. LSU is amazing, and I can’t wait to be a part of that environment and community along with the rest of the girls.”

She closed with a heartfelt message to Tiger Nation:

“Thank you for taking a chance on me and my sister. I’m super grateful and blessed to be a part of Tiger Nation. I could not be more excited to be a part of it. Tiger Nation is amazing, and it is a blessing to be able to experience it in the future!”

For two sisters who chose different roads to create their own identities, the journey has come full circle.

They’re together again. And this time, they’re bringing proven production, championship experience and the winning culture of Buford High School with them to Baton Rouge.
