Discovering The Future of Softball : Unveiling the Rising Star Milan Torres

In this series, I usually avoid featuring players from the same travel ball team in back to back weeks, but this time I will make an exception for Milan Torres. Milan, who patrols centerfield for Mojo-Lewis, is an up-and-coming prospect attracting interest from numerous P5 schools. She is renowned for her defensive skills in chasing down balls and executing remarkable catches.

I had a discussion with Milan where I discovered her aspirations, accomplishments, colleges that are standing out to her, and gained insight into her personal life, all of which I will include in this article. She has numerous accomplishments to take pride in, but here are a select few that she holds in highest regard. She says "I am proud of making First Team All State for my high school team as well as Defensive 4A Player of the Year." She values more than just her play on the field as she added "I work hard in the class room and received scholar athlete and all county first team two years in a row."

Torres was not always a Georgia girl as she says, "Before moving to GA in 2022, I lived in California my whole life and I really enjoyed being able to surf with my dad. I also got really into skateboarding." Family is something that is super important to Milan as she says, "Outside of softball, things I find important are my relationship with God and my relationships with my family and friends. I am passionate about these things because if it weren’t for God, I wouldn’t be standing where I am today, as well as if I didn’t have my family and friends supporting me, I also wouldn’t be standing where I am today." She acknowledged both her parents and coaches for their support and guidance throughout her softball journey by stating, "My parents have always helped me and pushed me to be better. I also get a lot of my motivation from my dad who works very hard to provide for my family, and it motivates me to work towards my craft. I also have a lot of support from my school ball coach and my travel ball coaches."

When discussing what makes her a great outfielder, she stated, "I believe my strengths are my communication in the outfield, my athleticism, as well as my ability to read and track balls. I also believe my confidence overall as an athlete and my work ethic." She added " would describe my game as being a competitor who wants to win. I like playing for my teammates and being a dawg in the box and on the field."

As far as her goals, she went on to say, "My goals are to be able to keep growing in softball as a player and as a person. I also want to be an All-American player in college and play all four years." When discussing if there were any colleges that have caught her eye, she detailed who and why when saying, "I would say I really like the culture LSU and FSU have with their staff and the players. It makes the place feel like a home." She went on further to explain why culture is such a huge factor for her, "Like the question before, I like schools that have a really good culture. It makes them stand out to me because once you’re going to be at that school for four years. I want to pick a school to play all four years at, to grow as a player and a person. I want to pick the right one the first time."

On what drives her to succeed in softball, she added, "I like how free I feel when I play. It also brings me a lot of joy to succeed in a sport that’s full of failure." A few of those successes that stand out to her were very recent, as she detailed, "Recently, I made a catch falling over the fence in Colorado while playing against Unity Johnson. I just wasn’t worried about anything else other than catching the ball. I wouldn’t have caught it either if it weren’t for Jo Young, my teammate in left field, talking to me. It felt amazing to rob what would have been a three-run home run and help my pitcher out." She went on to say, "In high school ball, I hit a walk-off double against Walnut Grove to secure us a spot in the State Playoffs!"

Milan Torres emerges as a compelling figure to watch in the next two years, as her journey through a crucial period is expected to captivate. Transitioning into the collegiate realm, her choices and achievements are anticipated to have a significant impact.
