New LSU Transfer Mickey Winchell: “From The Moment I Stepped On Campus, It Felt Like Home”

When Mickey Winchell entered the transfer portal, she wasn’t simply looking for a new place to play softball. She was looking for a program that could challenge her, develop her, and give her an opportunity to compete for championships during the final season of her college career. She found that at LSU.

“LSU checked every box for me,” Winchell told LSU Daily News. “The culture, the people, the level of competition, and the opportunity to compete for championships all stood out. More than anything, it felt like a place where I could continue to grow as a player while being surrounded by people who genuinely cared about me as a person.” The feeling came quickly.

“From the moment I stepped on campus, it felt like home.”

One of the biggest factors in her decision was an early conversation with LSU hitting coach Bryce Neal. According to Winchell, his passion for the game and vision for the program immediately caught her attention and never left her mind throughout the recruiting process.

“The moment I knew LSU was where I wanted to be was after my first conversation with Coach Bryce Neal,” Winchell said. “His enthusiasm for the game was contagious, and the way he talked about LSU, the culture, and the expectations of the program really stood out to me.”

“There was just something special about LSU that I couldn’t stop thinking about after that conversation. It became clear to me that this was a place I needed to be a part of, and that feeling only grew stronger throughout the process.”

Winchell arrives in Baton Rouge with a reputation as one of the most complete players in the country. During the 2026 season, she led Notre Dame in hits, runs scored, and walks while starting every game in center field and adding 14 stolen bases.

Yet when asked what she takes the most pride in as a player, her answer had little to do with any individual statistic. “I take the most pride in being a complete player,” she said. “Whether that’s getting on base, creating pressure with my speed, playing defense, or finding ways to help my teammates succeed, I want to impact the game in as many ways as possible.”

“If I had to pick one thing, it’s probably my ability to consistently find ways to contribute to winning.” That team-first approach is paired with an intense competitive streak that she believes LSU fans will quickly come to appreciate. “I think LSU fans are really going to get to know my competitive side,” Winchell said. “I hate losing, and I think that’s part of the mentality it takes to play at LSU.”

Away from the field, Winchell says her faith remains the foundation of everything she does.

“I’m a woman of God first and foremost, and my faith is the foundation for everything I do,” she said. “I try to glorify the Lord through the way I compete, the way I treat others, and the way I live my life every day.”

She hopes to be remembered for much more than what she accomplishes on the softball field. “At the end of the day, I want to be known not only for what I accomplish on the field, but for the impact I have on others and the relationships I build along the way.”

Winchell also has ambitious goals beyond softball. She has developed a strong interest in sports law, particularly contract work and eventually working within professional sports, while also exploring the possibility of pursuing real estate law. One thing that stood out during the recruiting process was LSU’s willingness to help her learn more about those career paths. “LSU has been really good about connecting me with a bunch of people in that field so that I can ask questions and see what I want to get into,” Winchell said.

For Winchell, LSU represented more than an opportunity to compete for championships. It was a place that invested in her future both on and off the field. As she prepares for her first season in purple and gold, her goals remain simple.

“Personally, I want to maximize every opportunity and leave no regrets,” she said. “Team-wise, the goal is simple: compete for championships.” Winchell added “More than anything, I want to leave Baton Rouge knowing I gave everything I had to this program and my teammates.”

She closed with a message directly to Tiger Nation.

“Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. Ever since I entered the transfer portal, LSU stood out because of the passion, pride, and tradition that surround this program. After experiencing it firsthand, I can honestly say I’m honored to be a Tiger. I promise to give everything I have to this team every single day. I’ll compete with passion, play for the name on the front of the jersey, and do whatever it takes to help LSU win.I can’t wait to experience Tiger Park, represent this university, and chase something special alongside my teammates.
