Sierra Daniel Leading LSU Offense as Junior Season Clicks Into Gear

When Sierra Daniel arrived at LSU as a freshman, she didn’t necessarily expect to be thrown into the spotlight early. But injuries on the roster opened the door, and Daniel quickly found herself gaining valuable experience at the collegiate level. Looking back now as a junior, she believes those early opportunities — along with the struggles that came with them — played a major role in shaping the player she is today.

“You know, it was unexpected,” Daniel said. “Obviously with Karli Petty going down and then Danieca, that experience shaped me so much into who I am today. Not only getting the experience of playing my freshman year, but the struggles too. I had a lot of ups and downs my freshman year, and looking back now, as hard as they were, I think they made me a lot stronger and a better player.”

That growth is clearly showing this season.

Daniel has emerged as one of LSU’s most productive hitters through the early portion of the season. In 21 games, Daniel currently leads LSU in batting average (.414), OPS (1.125), slugging percentage (.586), on-base percentage (.538), and walks (17). She also ranks second on the team in triples with three, highlighting the impact she’s making across multiple offensive categories. She has 24 hits in 58 at-bats while scoring 16 runs and driving in 12 RBIs. Her ability to both get on base and drive the ball has made her one of the most dangerous bats in the Tigers lineup.

The improvement didn’t happen overnight. Daniel credits the work she put in during the offseason and a key conversation with LSU hitting coach Bryce Neal that helped unlock her confidence at the plate. “I remember in the preseason having a conversation with Bryce,” Daniel said. “We worked a lot more on my hitting this year, and he told me before the season started to just go for it. We worked really hard all fall, and him saying that to me really clicked. It allowed me to just be free from the jump.”

That freedom at the plate has translated into consistent production for the Tigers.

Daniel says a big part of that success has come from improving her plate discipline — something that became a major focus during fall training. “It’s definitely something I’ve had to really work on,” she said. “Especially this fall, that was one of my main focuses — my plate discipline. It’s something I had to get better at.”

Now in her junior season, Daniel also finds herself stepping into more of a leadership role on a roster that blends experienced players with younger talent. “I would say so,” Daniel said when asked about taking on more of a leadership role. “But even from my freshman year they talked about how you can be a leader at any age. We have freshmen who do a great job leading in the dugout and supporting everyone.”

Daniel still remembers one moment from her freshman season that helped reinforce her confidence and belief that she could make an impact for the Tigers. During the SEC Tournament that year, LSU head coach Beth Torina pulled her aside before the first game with unexpected news.

“I wasn’t really a main starter at that point,” Daniel said. “Coach pulled me aside before game one and told me I was going to lead off. I remember thinking, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Going from occasionally being in the lineup to leading off in the SEC Tournament as a freshman — that moment has stuck with me ever since.” -Sierra Daniel

Now in her third season with the program, Daniel believes this year’s LSU team has the potential to grow stronger through adversity. Unlike previous seasons where LSU started undefeated, this year’s group has already faced challenges early in the schedule — something Daniel believes could ultimately benefit the Tigers as the season progresses.

“In the past we started off like 19-0 and undefeated,” she said. “This year we’ve had some losses early, but going through that can fuel you. When you work through those things early, you can come back even stronger later.”

With LSU preparing for a road matchup against No. 1 Tennessee, Daniel says the key will be trusting the work the team puts in every day behind the scenes.

“No one really sees what goes on inside these walls at practice,” she said. “We work really hard. It’s about trusting our preparation, trusting our abilities, and leaning on each other. It’s going to take all of us.” - Sierra Daniel

If Daniel continues producing at the plate the way she has early this season, she will play a major role in helping LSU make that push as SEC play continues.
