LSU Volleyball Set for Exciting Non-Conference Matches Against 2024 NCAA Tournament Teams

BATON ROUGE, La. – The excitement is brewing as the LSU volleyball team gears up for the upcoming 2025 season, with head coach Tonya Johnson unveiling an intriguing non-conference schedule. For passionate Tigers supporters, this season promises thrilling matches against some of the nation’s most challenging programs, offering a unique chance to see the team’s growth and potential on the court. In year 4 of Tonya Johnson's stint in Baton Rouge she finally is getting the opportunity to go into the season with a roster fully created by her and her staff. This team looks ripe for an NCAA tournament bid.

This non-conference schedule includes 11 matches, with four against teams that not only reached the second round of the competitive 2024 NCAA Tournament but excelled within their conferences, providing a sharp test for LSU.

Key Matchup Highlights

The opening weekend is set to light up Baton Rouge. On August 29, the Tigers will face Southern Methodist University (SMU), a team known for its dynamic play style that was ranked No.15 last season. This will be followed by matches against South Alabama and Baylor ranked No.20 last season on August 30 and 31, respectively. Both opponents have had strong seasons in the past, offering a solid early gauge of where LSU stands. These initial matches are crucial for building momentum and confidence as they kick off a demanding season.

The excitement continues the following weekend when the Tigers travel to Houston, Texas, to engage with Omaha, San Diego State, and the University of Houston from September 4-6. The Fertitta Center will host these games, creating an electric atmosphere. Historically, these teams have challenged LSU, setting a standard that will be key for the Tigers as they prepare for their SEC matchups.

Showdown at the Net Tournament

Week three features a compelling matchup against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend, Indiana, on September 9. This match is part of the inaugural Showdown at the Net tournament, where LSU will compete against several schools from the Southeastern Conference alongside teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Such high-caliber competition will provide the Tigers with a platform to showcase their skills against some of the best in the nation.

After this intense road game, the Tigers will return home on September 14 to face Southeastern Louisiana at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. This match gives local fans a chance to rally behind the team, especially after a challenging away game.

Final Weekend Challenge in Los Angeles

As the non-conference slate draws to a close, LSU will travel to Los Angeles for a pivotal series from September 25-27. They will face the University of Southern California (USC) ranked No. 24 last season, in two matches before concluding against California. These opponents are renowned for their rich volleyball traditions, making them formidable challenges. Engaging with such programs will prepare LSU for the rigors of the SEC season.

Challenges Await in SEC Play

But the challenges don’t end with non-conference play. As LSU transitions into SEC competition, they will travel to face Oklahoma on September 26 and Arkansas on September 28, both of which are known for their passionate home crowds. The Tigers will then return to Baton Rouge to host Tennessee and Florida during the first weekend of October—two highly anticipated matches that promise to attract considerable fan interest.

The SEC is synonymous with intense competition, and this year’s tournament will follow suit. The return of the SEC Volleyball Tournament, which hasn’t taken place since 2005, heightens the stakes. Scheduled for November 21-25 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia, this event is a fantastic opportunity for teams to demonstrate their progress and resilience throughout the season.

Excitement Builds for 2025 Season

The upcoming 2025 volleyball season for the LSU Tigers is set to be thrilling. With a well-crafted non-conference schedule featuring intense matches against (4) programs that were National Seeds in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, this season will serve as a true benchmark for the team's skills and unity.

For LSU fans, the thrill of competition, the intensity of the plays, and the bonds formed among players will fill the atmosphere with energy.
