With the second commitment of LSU’s heralded 2027 recruiting class, Jewel Cooper has made her decision — and it’s a big one. The No. 29 overall prospect and the No. 7 catcher in the nation out of Liberty High School (Oakley, CA) joins the Tigers as they continue their push for back-to-back No. 1 ranked classes.

LSU got things rolling early with No. 32 overall Bryli Seifert, and now Cooper’s addition provides another marquee piece in what is shaping up to be a powerhouse group. Known as a right-handed power-hitting catcher with presence behind the plate, Cooper brings both offensive strength and defensive leadership to the table.
When September 1 rolled around, Cooper didn’t waste much time. She recalls the moment clearly, as the entire LSU coaching staff hopped on a video call with her. “I knew this was the right decision,” she said, describing the excitement she felt mirrored by the coaches on the other end.

For Cooper, the choice to commit early came down to something deeper than just softball. LSU, she explained, simply felt like home. From her very first camp in Baton Rouge, she had the sense that she belonged. “It just feels like family,” she said, reflecting on how natural the decision came once the opportunity was real.
September 1 itself was a whirlwind. The calls started at 12:01 a.m. and stretched late into the afternoon. While the nerves were there, Cooper credited her travel coaches for preparing her to handle the long day and keeping her grounded throughout the process.
As for her game, Cooper doesn’t hesitate to define her style: a power-hitting, right-handed catcher who thrives in the heart of the lineup. Her goals for the coming year are straightforward — keep training, keep getting stronger, and continue sharpening the tools that have made her one of the most coveted players in the 2027 class.
Now, with her future home picked out, Cooper says the feeling is nothing short of “amazing.”
What It Means for LSU
With Cooper on board, LSU continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail and further solidifies its dominance behind the plate. Adding a Top 30 prospect and one of the nation’s premier catchers gives the Tigers another anchor in their future lineup.
Pairing Cooper with fellow Top 32 prospect Bryli Siefert signals LSU’s intent to not just keep pace nationally, but to set the standard. Head coach Beth Torina and her staff are stacking high-end talent early, and the 2027 class is shaping up to be another historic haul in Baton Rouge.
The message is clear: LSU isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
