No. 17 LSU Tigers softball pushed the nation’s top-ranked team throughout the weekend but ultimately came up short as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers softball walked off the Tigers 8–5 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep in Knoxville.

Coming into the weekend, Tennessee had not allowed more than two runs in a game all season, showcasing one of the most dominant pitching staffs in college softball. LSU challenged that dominance multiple times during the series, including a six-run performance in Game 2 and five more runs in the finale.

The series opener saw Tennessee control the game behind strong pitching and timely offense.
LSU was unable to generate consistent offense and was held scoreless as the Lady Vols secured a 5–0 victory to open SEC play.

Saturday’s matchup turned into a slugfest that initially looked promising for LSU.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4–0 first-inning lead, immediately putting pressure on Tennessee’s pitching staff.
However, the Lady Vols responded with a six-run third inning that flipped the momentum and ultimately powered Tennessee to an 11–6 victory.
Despite the loss, LSU became the first team this season to break Tennessee’s two-run barrier, showing the Tigers could pressure the nation’s top-ranked team offensively.

For the second straight game, LSU struck first.
The Tigers built another 4–0 lead early, but Tennessee chipped away and eventually took a brief one-run advantage before LSU tied the game at 5–5 heading into the final inning.
With the game tied in the seventh, Tennessee delivered the decisive blow, plating three runs to secure the 8–5 walk-off win and complete the sweep.
LSU showed it could compete with the nation’s top-ranked team throughout the weekend, but there are no moral victories in college softball. The Tigers had opportunities to close the door late, and turning those chances into wins will be the next step as SEC play continues.
